Finding the Right Window for You By Paul Wright

Windows provide stunning views, natural daylight and protection from the outdoor elements. And since there is an endless array of window options to choose from, choosing the right window to fit your needs can be a daunting task.

Window Overview – Window Material Types

Windows are available in a variety of materials, styles and design. From decorative bay windows to distinctive casement windows, each window serves a function and purpose in your home. The construction materials, frames and sash can all impact the window quality and performance.

Once a popular choice for homeowners, aluminum windows are used less in homes today. They tend to be less energy efficient than other window options on the market. Yet, aluminum remains a good choice for large picture windows to create complex custom window designs. To maximize efficiency, aluminum windows with a thermal break on the inside and outside of a window are recommended.

Vinyl windows provide maintenance-free ownership, good energy-efficiency and affordability. Vinyl windows are available in all sizes and shapes. One of the only drawbacks to vinyl windows is the limited color choices of white or beige.

Wood windows add instant appeal to any home. Solid wood windows will require painting and periodic maintenance to maintain optimal performance. Wood windows are also available with vinyl or aluminum cladding on the exterior to minimize maintenance requirements.

Window Overview – Energy Efficiency Considerations

Windows can have a substantial impact on the energy consumption of a home. Windows featuring double or triple glazing combined with low-E coatings can help eliminate cold drafts and excessive heat in the summer months.

For optimal performance and energy efficiency, look for ENERGY STAR windows for your region and climate. To simplify window comparisons, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) rates the U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain and air leakage. In all cases, a lower number rating offers the most protection and energy savings. Look for a higher number when comparing condensation and visible transmission (VT) ratings.

Before selecting windows for your home, be sure to take into consideration your climate, maintenance requirements and performance expectations. A good rule of thumb is to buy windows offering the best efficiency, warranty and performance you can afford.
